Former Nevada governor Bob List to head energy group

Three Nevada Governors

Former Nevada Governor Robert List is interviewed at the Mob Museum in downtown Las Vegas Wednesday, April 25, 2013. List and former governors Bob Miller and Richard Bryan participated in a panel discussion titled “Protectors of the State A Conversation with Three Former Governors.

Former Republican Gov. Bob List will head a new group that’s advocating for casino and solar companies battling with NV Energy in the Public Utilities Commission.

Wynn Las Vegas, Las Vegas Sands and SolarCity created the Nevada Coalition to Protect Ratepayers during the 2015 legislative session and will use it as a vehicle to spread this message: Rooftop solar and casino exits won’t drive up electricity costs for NV Energy, a regulated monopoly that supplies power to the majority of Nevadans.

"We want to dispel the notion that alternative sources will drive up the cost for ratepayers who stay with the utility,” List said. “Being knocked down by a monopoly is not a healthy thing for America.”

The coalition will launch a digital ad campaign in the coming weeks to coincide with upcoming PUC hearings on rooftop solar, casino exits and NV Energy’s long-term supply plan.

Regulators will spend the rest of the year considering how state laws and renewable energy alternatives affect NV Energy’s future. The casinos, who are among the utility’s largest customers, want more choices for creating and purchasing energy, and consumers want to cut their power bills by generating electricity with solar panels. NV Energy has said consumer costs will rise if the PUC lets those scenarios play out. The commission’s three regulators will make final rulings on the casinos and rooftop solar by December.
