Centennial head coach Leon Evans directs his players as they face Liberty in high school football game on Friday, September 18, 2015.

Centennial High quarterback Jamaal Evans accounted for five touchdowns Friday against Desert Oasis, carrying the Bulldogs to a 42-7 victory.

Evans rushed for 182 yards and four touchdowns, and passed for 123 yards and another score.

Kayvon Miller caught six passes for 70 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for nearly 100 yards.

“We are playing with a chip on our shoulder,” Centennial coach Leon Evans said.

Centennial (7-1) takes on Arbor View next week in the Northwest League championship game. It’s easily one of the most anticipated games of the season — the schools are closely located to create a natural rivalry and the winner gets the No. 1 seed in the playoffs.

“The kids went to middle school and elementary school together. The families know each other,” Evans said. “That makes it a fun game.”

Centennial’s defense could be the difference. The Bulldogs have surrendered 28 points in their last four games, using a defeat Sept. 18 against Liberty as motivation.

And the defeat, you could argue, wasn’t that bad. Centennial limited Liberty to 27 points one week after Liberty scored more than 70 against the reigning Hawaii state champions.

“We give up 27 points to Liberty and all of a sudden we are the worst team in the city,” Evans said. “We are playing angry. We have something to prove.”
