UNLV campus among thousands of customers affected by power outage

More than 19,000 NV Energy customers in Clark County, including UNLV, were left without power Monday afternoon due to a large outage. The power company said on Twitter that it had dispatched crews to fix the outages affecting at least 20 ZIP codes in the valley.

As of 4 p.m., the company said on its website that 19,293 customers were out of power. NV Energy spokeswoman Jennifer Schuricht said debris in a power line caused the outages, which were resolved by about 4:30 p.m.

One of the larger electricity customers that appears to have been impacted was UNLV. The university reported that at least 40 buildings were without power. UNLV Police Services tweeted that while work crews were on the way, there was no estimated time of repair.

Some students and staff at UNLV took to social media to express frustration — that the air conditioner was off — and some celebration — that a big exam had been rescheduled.
