Dog dies, five people displaced in west valley fire

A small dog died and five people were displaced after a fire at a west valley home Sunday.

Firefighters responded about 8:15 a.m. to house at 4026 Garden Place, near South Valley View Boulevard and Alta Drive, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue officials said. Upon arrival, light smoke was showing from the front door of the small, one-story home.

Occupants safely got out of the home but told firefighters a small dog was still inside.

Firefighters found a mattress on fire and were able to put it out in less than three minutes, officials said. Other firefighters searched the house for the dog, but it had already died from smoke.

The cause of the fire is undetermined.

A mattress and a small dresser burned in the fire, causing about $3,000 in damage, officials said. Nobody was injured.

Two adults and three children received assistance from the American Red Cross and the Las Vegas Fire & Rescue Foundation, officials said.
