Dog’s body found after 1 of 2 overnight Las Vegas fires

Firefighters responded to two overnight fires in the valley, including one in which they discovered a dead dog.

According to Las Vegas Fire & Rescue:

The first fire was reported at 12:25 a.m. Saturday after a passerby reported smoke coming from a vacant apartment in a one-story apartment building at 2117 Ballard Drive, near Eastern Avenue and Charleston Boulevard.

Firefighters arrived to find squatters using a warming fire.

There was no damage, and the fire was extinguished. The apartment was secured after the squatters left.

The second fire occurred at 3:51 a.m., after a passerby reported smoke and flames coming from a small house or business-type building at 1504 S. Maryland Parkway.

Firefighters forced entry into the building, which had been converted into an office.

The fire, which was confined to the area that was once the living room, was extinguished within minutes. Thick smoke filled the rest of the building.

While searching the building, firefighters discovered a large, deceased dog in what was once a bedroom.

The fire caused an estimated $20,000 in damage.

The owner of the property was not on scene.

No injuries were reported in either of the incidents.
