Las Vegas hit a high temperature of 109 degrees today, which beat a 20-year-old record.

The record high for this date in Las Vegas was 107 degrees, National Weather Service meteorologist John Salmen said. That high was last recorded in 1996.

Saturday’s high temperature of 108 degrees also tied a record in 1996.

An excessive heat warning is still in effect until 8 p.m., which was set as temperatures were expected to reach over 106 degrees this weekend, he said.

The Fire Alarm Office, which dispatches several fire departments in the valley, responded to 350 medical aid requests from midnight Friday to about 8 a.m. Sunday, Clark County Fire Assistant Fire Chief Larry Haydu said. Several of these calls can be directly attributed to high heat, he said.

Temperatures are expected to decrease slightly Monday, reaching a high of 105 degrees and a low in the morning of 80 degrees, Salmen said.

Next weekend, temperatures will drop to the mid- to upper-90s on Friday and Saturday, Salmen said.
