Best Bets: Steve Martin & Martin Short, Green Day, DL Hughley and more for your Las Vegas weekend

Green Day

Green Day makes a tour stop at MGM Grand April 7.

The energy and excitement surrounding the debut performances of Ricky Martin: All In at the Monte Carlo’s Park Theater is captivating the Las Vegas Strip this weekend, but there’s much more music and fun to be had, and that includes some off-Strip entertainment events.

GREEN DAY After a long break from touring, the pop-punk stalwarts released Revolution Radio in October and hit the road in March—landing at MGM Grand Garden Arena Friday night—and recent shows have been hailed as high-energy efforts for a rock band that has truly seen it all. Expect frontman Billie Joe Armstrong to make up for past Vegas transgressions like his breakdown at the 2012 iHeart Radio Festival. April 7, tickets at 702-531-3826 or axs.com.

CELINE DION The arrival of Disney’s new film version of Beauty and the Beast may have reminded you that the theme song from the 1991 animated original was Dion’s first real international breakthrough, a duet with Peabo Bryson. Remember that? Fresh off celebrating her 49th birthday, the powerhouse vocalist is back at her legendary Colosseum production at Caesars Palace this month. April 7-8 (and continuing through April 22), tickets at 855-234-7469 or axs.com.

D.L. HUGHLEY Most comedians are dabbling in politics these days but Hughley has been doing it for a while, starring in his own late-night CNN show D.L. Hughley Breaks the News and currently hosting a New York radio morning show. He’ll likely be on the attack when he takes over the Orleans Showroom for two shows this weekend. April 7-8, tickets at 800-745-300 or ticketmaster.com.

STEVE MARTIN & MARTIN SHORT When these two comedy favorites team up at the Colosseum on Sunday (and they’ll return to Caesars for a few more dates later this year), there’s much more than standup going down. There’ll be plenty of music, from Martin with the banjo-centric Steep Canyon Rangers and Short with Jimmy Kimmel Live keyboardist Jeff Babko. There’ll be movie clips, but don’t expect them to do a two-man version of the Three Amigos salute. Do expect to be thoroughly entertained. April 9, tickets at 866-227-5938 or axs.com.

BILLY BOB THORNTON & THE BOXMASTERS As an actor he’s ubiquitous, popping up in so many favorite films in different roles and genres. But Billy Bob Thornton’s roots-rock band also packs a serious punch, having opened for Willie Nelson with a rich tapestry of originals and covers of rock and country favorites. The group plays the Smith Center’s Cabaret Jazz theater Sunday and Monday. April 9-10, tickets at 702-749-2000 or thesmithcenter.com.
