An ongoing dispute between neighbors escalated Saturday night into gunfire that left a man dead and another wounded near Flamingo Road and Decatur Boulevard, according to Metro Police.

The wounded man, who was shot in the buttocks, told arriving officers that he’d exchanged fire with the slain man, but police as of early Sunday had only recovered one gun —and the surviving man had it on him, Metro homicide unit Lt. Dan McGrath said.

The shooting was reported about 8:30 p.m. on a sidewalk in the 4500 block of Via Madrigal, a neighborhood about a mile west from the Rio, police said.

Responding officers immediately disarmed the man who’d been shot in the buttocks, McGrath said. The other man, only described as being Hispanic and in his late 20s, suffered multiple and fatal wounds to his upper body.

Both men were taken to University Medical Center where one died about an hour and a half later, and where the other was recovering and speaking to detectives Sunday morning, McGrath said.

The man had told officers that there was an exchange of fire, which followed an argument that started on the street, but detectives had only recovered one weapon as of early this morning, McGrath said.

Crime scene investigators were expected to determine if his account of the series of events is true, McGrath said.

The shot men lived in houses across from each other and neighbors told detectives that there had been a known ongoing dispute between residents from both houses, McGrath said. It wasn't immediately clear what the dispute was about.

A man from a third house, who may have been a witness or possibly involved in the incident, was being held by detectives, McGrath said. No arrests had been announced as of this morning.

The slain man had gang affiliations, but the shooting wasn't deemed to be gang-related, McGrath said. Gang detectives were at the scene, which coincided with their first day Metro reimplemented a centralized gang unit.
