Senate OKs bill increasing auto insurance coverage

CARSON CITY — Despite complaints that motorists would be hit with higher premiums, the Senate has approved a bill requiring car owners to carry more insurance coverage.

Senate Bill 308, approved by a 16-5 vote today, calls for motorists to have insurance coverage of $25,000 instead of $15,000 for one person injured or killed in a crash. It would raise coverage from $30,000 to $50,000 for injury or death of two or more people in a single crash.

The policy would be increased from $10,000 to $20,000 for property damage in a single crash.

Sen. Becky Harris, R-Las Vegas, said the increase in coverage brings Nevada in line with other states.

But Sens. Moe Denis, D-Las Vegas, and Don Gunderson, R-Sparks, said it could increase auto insurance premiums.

The bill now goes to the Assembly.
