Oregon group awarded contract to assess student reading skills

CARSON CITY — An Oregon company is getting a $1.7 million state contract to measure the reading skills of Nevada students in kindergarten through the third grade.

The state Board of Examiners today approved the contract between the state Department of Education and the Northwest Evaluation Association of Portland. The assessment is scheduled to begin this month and be finished by June.

The board also approved a $404 million Medicaid contract to take care of the dental needs of poor children in Clark and Washoe counties.

The contract went to Liberty Plan of Nevada of Las Vegas, despite a protest from rival Delta Dental, a national firm headquartered in Georgia.

Attorney Paul Georgeson, representing Delta Dental, said the contract was awarded in violation of state policy and ask asked the two-year deal be delayed.
