Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo announced today his intention to seek re-election next year.

The nearly 30-year law enforcement veteran began as a patrolman with Metro Police in 1989. He narrowly defeated retired Capt. Larry Burns in the November 2014 election for sheriff, edging him out by 2 percent of the vote.

“Metro is the finest police organization in America, I truly believe that, and we’ve gotten even better over these past three years,” Lombardo said in a statement. “We put more police on the streets, equipped with the latest technology, and combined that with a unique focus on community policing.”

Lombardo has lived in Clark County for 40 years and graduated from Rancho High School and UNLV. Before he was elected sheriff, he ran Metro’s homeland security, patrol and search-and-rescue divisions.

“Even before I was elected sheriff, I worked closely with the Justice Department to revamp our use-of-force policy and beef up our counter-terrorism infrastructure,” Lombardo said. “Now, there’s a culture of accountability that has saved lives while enhancing public trust. But there’s more to be done.”

Metro employs more than 4,000 officers and has an annual budget of more than $950 million.
