Solar users get extra time to apply for lower rates

CARSON CITY — The state Public Utilities Commission has given 5,528 people who installed or applied for rooftop solar units additional time to apply for lower rates.

The commission gave emergency approval to an application from NV Energy and solar companies to extend the deadline from Feb. 28 to July 1.

The commission ruled earlier that those with solar units and those who applied to NV Energy before Dec. 31 were “grandfathered” in to apply for reduced rates for 20 years.

NV Energy and the solar companies said in their petition to the PUC that only 2,320 customers, or 30 percent of those eligible, applied by the deadline.

The PUC, in its order Wednesday, directed NV Energy to conduct an aggressive program to notify these consumers that they qualify for the reduced rates. Solar companies should join in the outreach program, it said.
