Officials trying to identify item found under tarp near Colorado River

Investigators are trying to identify the origin of an "item" National Park Service officials discovered this morning at Nelson's Landing along the Colorado River, which initially was described as being human remains, according to the park service.

The discovery was reported about 9:45 a.m., near the Aztec Wash, officials said. Park service employees noticed a foul-smell and a tarp partially covering the item.

Police initially said that a body had been found and that it was possibly covered by concrete.

Metro and the park service were investigating.

Nelson’s Landing is southeast of Las Vegas at the end of State Route 165.
