Board OKs $14.4 million for design of UNLV medical school building

CARSON CITY — The state Board of Examiners today approved a $14.4 million contract for design and construction administration for the UNLV medical school. The school’s eventual cost will be $236 million.

The school opened classes this year with 60 students.

Chris Chimits, deputy manager of the state Public Works Division, said the first contract is with TSK Architects, which will provide architectural and engineering services for the 220,000-square-foot building.

The division will go before the Interim Finance Committee on Oct. 19 for release of the money.

The 2017 Legislature appropriated $25 million for the building. That amount was matched by $25 million from an unidentified private donor.

Construction should start in December 2019 and be completed in May 2022.
