Batten down the hatches: Strong winds coming Thursday

Outdoor furniture and garbage cans will be in danger of blowing away Thursday, as strong winds are projected to make their way into the Las Vegas valley, bringing gusts up to 45 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather service has issued wind advisory from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday, meteorologist Caleb Steele said.

The southwest winds will blow between 25 to 35 mph, with gusts climbing to 45 mph for most of the valley and as high as 55 mph in the Spring Mountains and Red Rock Canyon, officials said. The stronger winds will begin Thursday morning and peak in the afternoon, dropping as the day progresses, officials said.

Area boaters were advised to use extreme caution due to expected rough and hazardous conditions, and people should avoid open water, the weather service said.

Temperatures, meanwhile, are expected to drop over the next couple of days, with a projected high of 84 degrees on Thursday and about 77 degrees Friday and Saturday, Steele said.

But hooded-sweatshirt season will have to wait, as conditions will begin warming up on Sunday, gradually climbing into the high 80s by midweek.
