Police: Apparent road rage shooting leaves man dead in northwest valley

Updated Friday, Sept. 22, 2017 | 1:58 p.m.

A man was shot and killed and the suspected gunman, who told arriving officers he’d felt threatened before pulling the trigger, was booked on a murder count following an apparent road rage incident Thursday night in a northwest valley gated neighborhood, according to Metro Police.

Gunfire erupted about 7:15 p.m. on Swamp Rose Avenue, near Fort Apache Road and Grand Teton Drive, Metro homicide unit Lt. Dan McGrath said in a media briefing.

The suspected shooter, identified as Jim Davis, 62, called 911 after shooting the other man, who is also in his 60s, McGrath said. Davis was being held without bail at the Clark County Detention Center.

It wasn’t immediately clear where the incident involving the two pickup trucks began, but it ended in the middle of Swamp Rose, McGrath said.

Davis told officers that he’d honked at the victim near the entrance of the neighborhood due to the way the man was driving, police said.

Davis said the other man, who had been driving ahead of him, got out of his truck and approached his vehicle, McGrath said. Feeling threatened, Davis said, he fired a single .45 caliber round.

The other man, who was fatally wounded in the head and was by himself, did not appear to be armed, McGrath said. Detectives were interviewing one of several family members with Davis in the truck, police said.

The incident “resulted in a death that didn’t have to happen,” McGrath said. “It looks like (Davis) had an opportunity to drive away.”
