Police: Motorist says he wishes deadly confrontation avoided

A motorist arrested in the fatal shooting of another driver Thursday night told detectives that avoiding a confrontation would have been a good idea, but he didn’t have a chance to think things through, according to a Metro Police arrest report.

Jim Reed Davis, who was arrested on a count of murder, said he honked at a pickup truck in front of him because it was driving slowly and brake-checking him, according to police.

Davis reported that the other driver, later identified as Lloyd Ullyott, 68, stopped in the middle of Swamp Rose Avenue and got out of the truck, police said.

Davis told detectives he also tried to get out of his vehicle, but Ullyott was blocking his door, according to the report. Unable to see Ullyott’s right hand and fearful he had something in it, Davis said, he grabbed his gun and fired once, fatally striking Ullyott in the head, according to the report.

Ullyott was not armed, police said.

In an interview, detectives asked Davis if he had considered rolling up his window, driving around Ullyott or backing up, police said.

Davis told them “now that he had a chance to think about it, that those would have been good ideas and he wished he had done one of those things,” police said. According to the report, a woman in Davis’ vehicle told him to back up as Ullyott was approaching them.

Davis is being held without bail at the Clark County Detention Center, jail logs show. His next scheduled court appearance is Oct. 24.
