The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Philadelphia Eagles plus-3 at Cleveland Browns, $440 to win $400: ESPN reported this week that the Browns are attracting a high number of bettors in Las Vegas because they are being featured on the HBO series, “Hard Knocks.” Everyone suddenly loves to support a team which didn’t win a game in 2017, and all thanks to the behind the scenes access from HBO.

Bettors have heavily wagered on Cleveland’s win total to go over 5.5 games, which has forced oddsmakers to change the betting number to six games. Yes, the Browns have brought in new players like Jarvis Landry and Tyrod Taylor to give them experience at the skilled positions. But I just don’t think it is enough.

Tonight’s preseason game will be slightly different because it’s the third week of games. This is considered the dress rehearsal for the regular season, meaning starters will play more than half the game.

Getting three points with the defending Super Bowl champion Eagles against a team which didn’t win a game last year is certainly good value.

Current Standings: Keefer (8-3, $11,608), Grimala 6-2, $10,800), Granger (4-0, $10,255), Brewer (3-4, $8,440)
