RENO — A bitter cold front has a grip on northeast Nevada with sub-zero temperatures, and snow is back in the forecast for western Nevada where a winter weather advisory is in effect late Tuesday and early Wednesday along the Sierra's eastern front.
The National Weather Service issued the advisory Tuesday from south of Carson City all the way north to the Oregon line effective from 7 p.m. Tuesday to 10 a.m. Wednesday.
It includes Carson City, Gardnerville, Virginia City and the Reno-Sparks area, where up to 2 inches (5 centimeters) of snow is possible early Wednesday and up to 4 inches (10 cm) in the foothills above 5,000 feet (1,524 meters).
Chains or snow tires were required Tuesday on about a 12-mile (19 kilometers) stretch of U.S. Interstate 80 east of Reno where icy conditions caused a series of spinouts and fender-benders west of Fernley but no injuries were reported.
Chains or snow tires also were required on the Mount Rose Highway connecting Reno to Lake Tahoe. But I-80 over the Sierra summit remained open, and no controls were ordered on most other area mountain passes.
About an inch (2.5 centimeters) of snow was recorded early Tuesday at Fernley and Fallon, the National Weather Service said.
No snow was in the forecast for northeast Nevada. But overnight lows fell early Tuesday to minus-5 degrees (-20.5 Celsius) in Eureka, minus-2 (-18.9 C) in Ely near the Utah line and 3 degrees (-16 C) in Elko. The low at Elko isn't expected to rise above 15 degrees (-9 C) until the weekend.
