Man sentenced to nearly 6 years for possession of child pornography

After receiving a tip from a Las Vegas woman in 2016, authorities found more than 15,000 files of child pornography on her husband’s electronic devices, including some that showed sexual abuse of toddlers, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Nevada.

Ryan Austin Rother, 43, turned himself in to the FBI and in January pleaded guilty to one count of possession of child pornography, federal court records show.

He was sentenced today to nearly six years in federal prison, which will be followed with a lifetime of supervision, officials said.

The investigation began with a bank transaction on Oct. 13, 2016, officials said.

Rother’s wife was using one of his computers to email a bank when she found child pornography and nonsexual pictures of an 8-year-old neighbor girl, according to court documents.

She called Metro Police and showed them some of the images, including one depicting a man sexually assaulting a girl, officials said.

Upon serving a search warrant, authorities discovered 15,676 pictures and 40 videos of child pornography on four different devices belonging to Rother, officials said. About 300 images depicted violence and 3,000 of them showed sexual assault on infants and toddlers, officials said.
