The Moapa Valley High football team surrendered a 77-yard touchdown on its first defensive play tonight against visiting Cheyenne in the 3A playoffs.

“But we march it right down (the field) and score on them,” Pirates coach Brent Lewis said.

Then, two plays later, Cheyenne again scored on a long pass. That trend couldn’t continue — not with the way Moapa Valley was controlling the clock with its run game.

The Pirates eventually pulled away for a 42-19 victory and a spot in next week’s state semifinals, dominating Cheyenne with its powerful run game. Moapa Valley only passed seven times.

“We pretty much took control of the game,” Lewis said.

Hayden Redd and Braeden St. John each rushed for more than 100 yards for Moapa Valley, including 20 carries for 106 yards and three touchdowns from St. John.

Quarterback Luke Bennett rushed and passed for a touchdown.

Moapa Valley will host either Truckee or Lowry — they play Saturday — in the semifinals.
