Metro officers fatally shoot man during encounter in southwest Las Vegas

A call to Metro Police early Saturday to report a suspicious man roaming through a south valley neighborhood turned deadly when two officers shot and killed the man as he advanced toward them holding what appeared to be a weapon, Capt. Nichole Splinter said.

The caller about 12:15 a.m. told police that there was a suspicious man walking around some cars while holding a lock pick tool, commonly known as a “Slim Jim,” or a stick, Splinter said.

At least two officers arrived to the neighborhood in the 5400 block of Tinker Toy Avenue, near Lindell and Robindale roads, and saw that the man “appeared to have a weapon in his hand,” Splinter said.

For about five minutes, the officers spoke with the man, trying to convince him to put down whatever he was holding, Splinter said.

But the man did not comply, and eventually began advancing toward them, prompting two officers to open fire, fatally wounding him at the scene, Splinter said.

Police did not say what exactly the man was carrying.

Further details were not provided. Per protocol, the names of the officers involved will be released within 48 hours, and a detailed briefing is expected in 72.
