Snow pellets spotted in some parts of Las Vegas

A winter system that’s brought rain and “snow pellets” in some parts of the Las Vegas valley is expected to move out by tonight, according to the National Weather Service.

The same slow-moving system has been the cause of cloudy, rainy and cooler conditions the past few days, meteorologist Trevor Boucher said. But it’s on its last legs.

Earlier today, a cold front dropped temperatures enough to prompt the fall of graupel, said Boucher, who described it as “very, very small” ice crystals that disintegrate as soon as they hit a surface.

Though the flakes were mostly reported in the west valley, they also were falling as far east as McCarran International Airport, Boucher said. The ice can easily, but inaccurately, be confused for sleet and hail.

Temperatures in the valley this afternoon had reached a chilly 49 degrees; well above freezing, Boucher said.
