A lengthy standoff between a wanted man and Metro Police ended in a shootout that left the suspect fatally wounded Thursday night in a south valley neighborhood, Capt. Jamie Prosser said.

The suspect, who died at the scene, was wanted on several warrants, including one for attempted murder, Prosser said early Friday.

About 4:30 p.m., Metro detectives looking to arrest the suspect on the warrants found him in the 400 block of Macbrey Drive, near Bermuda Road and Windmill Lane, Prosser said.

But the suspect barricaded himself in a house, Prosser said, prompting SWAT officers and negotiators to respond.

For the next 4 1/2 hours, efforts to get him to surrender proved ineffective, Prosser said.

About 9 p.m., the suspect, who was armed with a rifle, began to shoot at police, who returned fire, killing him, Prosser said.

Details on the investigation were preliminary, Prosser said about 2:15 a.m. Friday.

It wasn’t clear if the man was alone or if the house in which he barricaded himself was his. There were also no further details on the crimes he was accused of committing.

No one else was injured, Prosser said.

The suspect's identity will be released by the Clark County Coroner’s Office. As for the officers involved in the shooting, Metro policy dictates they will be publicly named within 48 hours.

A more detailed briefing is expected by early next week.
