Bedridden woman rescued from house fire in north valley

Firefighters rescued a bedridden elderly woman from a bedroom Wednesday as a blaze raced through her north valley house, according to Las Vegas Fire & Rescue.

A 911 dispatcher picked up a call at 12:37 p.m. from a panicked resident stating that a house in the 6300 block of Tropical Parkway was in flames and that the elderly woman could not escape, officials said.

Crews arrived at the neighborhood, tucked near Torrey Pines Drive, and found heavy flames and smoke billowing from the back of the one-story home, officials said. Smoke conditions were worse when they entered the wooden structure.

“This was not an option for bringing a victim out of the house,” said officials in a news release.

Fortunately, the victim’s bedroom was located toward the front of the house that had been spared by the black smoke cloud, officials said. “Firefighters then broke out the window and decided to bring the woman out through the window away from the smoke.”

The woman and another relative were taken to University Medical Center where they were being checked for apparent minor smoke inhalation, officials said.

The blaze may have been sparked at the back patio where a family member said they’d been cooking earlier in the day, officials said. Monetary damage was estimated at $80,000.

The three displaced residents found a place to stay — next door, where another family member lives, officials said.
