Food service worker at Desert Pines High dies of coronavirus

A cafeteria worker at Desert Pines High School has died as a result of the coronavirus, according to the Clark County School District.

The death of the unidentified Food Service Department employee prompted the closure of the Desert Pines food distribution center while it is “deep cleaned,” officials wrote in a news release.

Details on the worker’s illness, when it was contracted or when the person died weren’t disclosed.

“We are sorry that we lost a team member to this invisible virus,” the statement said. “Our thoughts are with our team member's family, loved ones, and colleagues.”

The victim’s co-workers were asked to “monitor their health,” said the district, noting that there’s no evidence the vicious virus is spread through food consumption.

Desert Pines, near Pecos Road and Washington Avenue, is one of at least 28 schools set up as food distribution centers where students can pick up free breakfast and lunch. They were opened after Gov. Steve Sisolak ordered schools to be shut down.

Workers at the food distribution centers have been instructed to use gloves when handling food, which is individually packaged, the statement said. The kitchens are cleaned and sanitized at least three times a day.

As of Thursday morning, COVID-19 had infected at least 1,125 people in Clark County, killing 34.
