Five days after gunshot wounds left her in “extremely” critical condition after her son opened fire on her and her husband, the woman's health prognosis had improved, according to Metro Police.

Her husband, Manuel Fernandez, a man in his 70s, died at the scene Saturday. Meanwhile, her son, Alfonso Fernandez, 30, remains at the Clark County Detention Center on counts of murder and attempted murder.

The younger Fernandez’s arrest report offers a glimpse into his thinking after he gunned down his father and tried to kill his mother during a family cookout.

He was angry at his family, he said, because they doubted his claims about hearing footsteps and others noises at home while he was under the influence of methamphetamine the night before, according to the report.

Lt. Ray Spencer said Saturday that the family was having a cookout when an argument broke out. There were at least five people at the two-story house, including a toddler.

Fernandez lived at home with his parents and two sisters, the report said. No one believed his tale about the noises.

“Fernandez decided he was going to kill his mom and dad because it was their house and they make the rules,” a detective wrote in the report.

That’s when he told the sisters to leave but did not tell them why. His mother told him to stop, that he “was just hallucinating.”

The man asked his father to accompany him to the garage, the report said. Before shooting him, he told the elder Fernandez, “Why don’t you believe me?” the report said.

Afterward, he walked into the house and shot his mother in the living room, police said.

A 911 caller about 1 p.m. said her uncle was shooting a gun inside the house; his sister made the next call to say that he’d shot their mother.

Police found the critically injured woman by a stairway, police said. She was rushed to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center. He turned himself in without further incident.

Officers retrieved magazines and 9mm rounds from his clothing, the report said.

After the shooting, he went upstairs, where the rest of the family was hiding. He told detectives he told his sisters “he was sorry.”

He told detectives he “only intended to shoot his parents and not his siblings,” the report said.
