Health District confident COVID-19 death tally is accurate

The Southern Nevada Health District is confident the count of coronavirus deaths in Clark County, which stood at 196 today, is fairly accurate.

“Death reporting is a challenge,” said Dr. Vit Kraushaar, district medical investigator. While there may be some cases off the investigators’ radar, they shouldn’t create a large discrepancy with the official tally, he said.

In the first weeks of the pandemic, places like Boston, Detroit and New York City were seeing a disproportionate increase of at-home deaths that may have been due to the virus but not counted in official figures, according to a ProPublica investigation.

That has not been the case in Southern Nevada, officials said.

Most coronavirus deaths in the Las Vegas area have been reported by hospitals, Kraushaar said. A total of 15 coronavirus deaths have been confirmed elsewhere, he said.
