Man in Pahrump standoff fires at officers, is taken into custody

A gunman is in custody after a standoff in which he fired at officers at a Pahrump home for about an hour Thursday night, according to the Nye County Sheriff’s Office.

The officers, who didn’t fire a single round, were not injured, Lt. David Boruchowitz said.

The suspect, who also wasn’t hurt, was only described as an “older white male,” said Boruchowitz, noting that he was being booked on at least one count of attempted murder on a protected person.

A neighbor reported gunfire in the 3200 block of Kings Way, about 70 miles west of Las Vegas.

Immediately after they arrived, deputies began taking gunfire in constant bursts of three to five bullets, Boruchowitz said. They had to hunker down behind their vehicles, and each time one of them moved, the gunman would shoot in their direction, he added.

The man stopped shooting and SWAT officers found and arrested him in a back bedroom.

Boruchowitz said detectives were waiting for a warrant to thoroughly search the home, but officers reported spotting multiple rifles.

The man wasn’t publicly identified. He has a history of trying to kill police in other jurisdictions, including in Las Vegas in 2001, Boruchowitz said. Investigators were waiting to learn more about those incidents.

Deputies had previous run-ins with the suspect but “nothing of this nature,” Boruchowitz said.
