North Las Vegas, NV Energy help struggling residents pay their utility bills

More than 4,000 North Las Vegas households with past-due power bills won’t have to immediately worry about being left in the dark.

That’s because North Las Vegas again partnered with NV Energy to wipe the balances of utility bills for 4,200 families struggling due to the coronavirus pandemic, city officials said Tuesday.

Payments, which total $650,000, do not include late fees from past-due bills, which NV Energy waived for accounts covered by the CARES Act Coronavirus Relief Fund.

Since October, the city and its NLV Cares Utility Assistance Program, which is funded by federal grants through Clark County, has infused nearly $2.7 million to pay off delinquent power and gas bills, officials said.

NV Energy thanked Mayor John Lee and the North Las Vegas City Council.

“We are appreciative of our partnership with the city of North Las Vegas in bringing relief to its residents who have been hit hard financially by COVID-19,” said Doug Cannon, NV Energy president and CEO, in a statement. “The CARES Act funding provided by the city, along with the bill credit provided by NV Energy, are making a meaningful difference in the lives of the residents of North Las Vegas directly affected by COVID-19."

“This program puts critical dollars directly into helping those who are struggling the most right now,” Lee said in the statement. “I’m proud to continue this important partnership with NV Energy to bring some financial ease to our residents during the holidays.”
