Police: Man fired 19 shots at officers

A man accused of trying to kill two uniformed Metro Police officers early Saturday fired 19 shots at them, Assistant Sheriff Christopher Darcy said.

Donta Ford, 26, was being held at the Clark County Detention Center on two counts of attempted murder and multiple counts of illegally discharging a gun, Las Vegas Justice Court logs show.

Police were summoned about 12:30 a.m. Saturday to a neighborhood near Bonanza Road and Eastern Avenue, where someone reported hearing gunfire, Darcy said.

Officer Daniel Clark, 30, and his partner were walking through a strip of apartments in the 2500 block of Mesquite Avenue when they encountered a man standing at the entrance of one of the units, police said.

“What’s up, my man?” an officer asked before the man began to shoot, police said.

Clark fired back as the officers ran for cover, Darcy said. The shooter fired a second volley of bullets before running inside the apartment, Darcy said.

Clark, who was placed on routine administrative leave during the investigation, fired seven rounds, Darcy said.

SWAT officers were summoned but didn’t find anyone in the apartment when they entered several hours later, Darcy said.

Ford was subsequently identified as the suspect and his information was distributed throughout the police department, Darcy said.

An officer spotted Ford in the area about seven hours later and arrested him without further incident, police said.
