Metro Police opened fire on an armed suspect who was subsequently arrested following a standoff with officers in an apartment near Lake Mead and Martin Luther King boulevards Monday afternoon.

Police said the man, whom they described as being in his 50s, suffered minor injuries to his hands, though it wasn't clear if he was hit by a bullet.

Apartment complex management summoned police about 10 a.m. to the 2100 block of Citrus Hills Avenue.

They said the man was aggressively waving a sword in front of an apartment, Capt. Fred Haas said.

Arriving officers encountered the "agitated" man, who had the weapon encased on his back, Haas said.

However, three minutes into the interaction, the suspect pulled out a gun, prompting police to shoot at him several times, Haas said. The man ran into an apartment where he barricaded himself for about three hours.

He was taken to a hospital where he was said to be doing well, Haas said.

Further details were not immediately available.
