Coronavirus prompts UNLV to cancel some study abroad programs

UNLV has canceled some of its study abroad programs amid growing concerns over the spread of the coronavirus.

The university’s programs in China, where the virus originated, have been halted, and programs in South Korea and Italy have also been canceled for the spring semester.

Eleven UNLV students studying in China returned or relocated to other study abroad locations in late January. The South Korea program had already been suspended, so there are no UNLV students studying there. The university is working to get students studying in Italy back to the United States.

“We continue to actively monitor this issue and remain in close contact with all of our students abroad as well as the central office of the University Study Abroad Consortium,” UNLV spokesman Tony Allen said. The consortium administers study abroad programs.

UNLV is not the only Nevada university to cancel study abroad programs.

UNR recently announced it would bring back students studying in South Korea and Italy. The school had previously canceled a summer program in China and is monitoring a Japan program set to start later this month.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has put Italy, South Korea and China under a Level 3 travel advisory because of the coronavirus, meaning nonessential travel is not recommended.

UNLV has launched a reference page about the coronavirus on the Student Health Center website to keep students informed about any developments with the disease. There have been no confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Nevada.
