NHP troopers fatally shoot road-rage suspect at I-15, Jean

Updated Thursday, May 7, 2020 | 10:05 p.m.

Two troopers shot and killed an alleged road-rage motorist after two pickup trucks exited Interstate 15 at Jean and pulled up to a substation, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

The suspect, who followed a motorist to the highway patrol command, was shot when he exited his vehicle and brandished a firearm, spokesman Trooper Travis Smaka said.

A person in a Dodge Ram called 911 about 5:50 p.m. to report being chased by a man in a Ford F-150 in a possible case of road rage, Smaka said. The reporting party said that the man was brandishing a gun.

The call, which initially was directed to Metro Police, was routed to NHP. Officers and troopers were responding when the trucks suddenly pulled into the substation, Smaka said.

Two troopers inside heard the commotion and stepped out to see the man in the Ford get out with a weapon in hand "up and ready" to shoot, Smaka said.

It wasn't clear exactly what happened next, but Smaka said both troopers opened fire, fatally wounding the suspect.

No other injuries were reported, said Smaka, adding that the motorist who was being followed did the right thing by calling 911 and driving toward law enforcement. He noted the person was lucky because the rural substations aren't always occupied.

Further details will be available within 72 hours, he said.
