Excessive heat warning in Las Vegas; record highs at Reno, Tahoe

RENO — A heat wave is continuing across the entire state of Nevada, where new record highs have been set at Lake Tahoe and Reno and more records are in jeopardy through Friday from Las Vegas to Elko.

Dangerously hot conditions for late May have triggered an excessive heat warning effective through 8 p.m. Friday for Las Vegas, where record- to near-record highs are expected between 105 and 110 degrees (40.5 and 43.3 C). Highs should approach 115 (46.1 C) at Lake Mead and 120 (48.8 C) at Death Valley National Park, the National Weather Service says.

The high of 92 (33.3 C) at Reno-Tahoe International Airport Tuesday broke the old record for the date of 91 (32.7 C) set in 1966. The high of 80 (26.6 C) at South Lake Tahoe, California eclipsed the old mark of 79 (26.1 C) set in 1983.

The mercury topped out Tuesday at 100 (37.7 C) at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas. The record there is 108 Wednesday (42.2 C) and 109 (42.7 C) Thursday.

The weather says records are likely to be broken in northeast Nevada Friday afternoon as temperatures reach the mid- to upper-90s (mid-30s C) in Elko County.
