Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak responds to a question during a news conference at the Sawyer State Building in Las Vegas,Tuesday, March 17, 2020. Sisolak ordered a monthlong closure of casinos and other non-essential businesses in order to stem the spread of the new coronavirus (COVID-19).

Gov. Steve Sisolak has not been infected by the coronavirus.

A COVID-19 swab test taken Tuesday night came back negative today, Sisolak’s office announced. Sisolak took the test as a precaution after he’d learned that an employee at a building he’d visited had tested positive for the virus.

The governor had visited a Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation facility in Carson City, where an employee later tested positive for COVID-19.

The asymptomatic employee was not in the building during Sisolak’s short appearance. “The governor made a brief visit to DETR — while wearing a face covering and practicing social distancing — to thank the employees for their tireless work connecting Nevadans to their unemployment benefits during this time,” Sisolak’s office said in a statement.

The scare prompted Sisolak to distance himself at the Governor’s Mansion, canceling a news conference Tuesday in which he was to announce Phase 2 of the state’s reopening. The governor instead released the plan online.

“The Governor’s Office in Carson City underwent cleaning according to the same guidelines, and the governor expects to return to work in the office on Thursday,” his office said.
