Las Vegas-based Allegiant Air laid off dozens of employees effective Thursday, according to a notice sent to state workforce officials.

In a letter dated Wednesday, the airline notified the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation that it would layoff 50 employees the following day.

The move comes as U.S. airlines continue to struggle financially from the economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic, which has caused drastic drops in air travel.

The layoffs are expected to be permanent, the airline said. Affected employees will get 60 days of pay and will continue to receive company health benefits through the end of the year, the notice said.

Over the summer, Allegiant announced it planned to eliminate more than 200 positions. Many of those jobs, however, were vacant.

Earlier this year, Allegiant reported it had close to 1,500 employees in Las Vegas.
