Best Bets: George Strait, Brian Newman, Jo Koy and more for your Las Vegas weekend

Jo Koy

Robyn Van Swank

Jo Koy is back to play one of his favorite cities this week.

Absolutely massive names in music and comedy spill out across the Strip this weekend, plus there’s a super-cool late-night show making its return to a one-of-a-kind venue at Park MGM. It’s all worth the trip.

BRIAN NEWMAN AFTER DARK He came to Las Vegas as the bandleader for Lady Gaga’s “Jazz & Piano” residency shows at Park Theater, but trumpeter Brian Newman quickly fell in love with the local music scene and its many talented players. That’s when his “After Dark” shows at the NoMad Library at Park MGM took off, featuring a rotating cast of guest musicians and entertainers stopping in for a song or two and an overall jazzy, vintage Vegas vibe. The fun is back all weekend long. August 12-14, nomadlasvegas.com.

GEORGE STRAIT Not even a global pandemic can stop the musical residency machine that is Strait to Vegas, the country legend’s T-Mobile Arena gig that has been going strong since the venue first opened five years ago. Up-and-coming Minnesota singer and songwriter Caitlyn Smith is the guest artist for this weekend’s concerts. August 13-14, t-mobilearena.com.

JO KOY The comedy cavalcade at Encore Theater continues with a true Las Vegas favorite — Koy lived here for years and owns a restaurant on the west side of town — taking over for two shows Friday and Saturday. If you miss him now, keep in mind he’ll be back September 3-5. August 13-14, wynnlasvegas.com.

USHER There are only two shows left in the opening run of Usher’s residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace. He’ll be back around New Year’s Eve, but you can bet those tickets will be hard to get considering the acclaim for his shows so far. August 13-14, caesars.com.

DANIEL TOSH While Cirque du Soleil thriller “KA” prepares its comeback plans, its incredible theater at MGM Grand sits quietly. But on Saturday night, the room will be filled with laughter as comedian and TV star Daniel Tosh brings his unique style to the Strip. Next month he’ll be back at his normal Vegas home at the Mirage.
