Defending state champion Liberty gave up a kickoff return for a touchdown to open the game Friday night against visiting Arbor View.

The Patriots also had more than 200 penalty yards and their Division I quarterback had two interceptions. Not exactly how you want to start the title defense, right?

“Bad all the way around,” Liberty coach Rich Muraco said.

But the Patriots were able to still win by a convincing margin, using seven catches for 71 yards and two touchdowns from Germie Bernard in a 42-14 victory.

Bernard also tossed a pair of 2-point conversion passes to Anthony Jones, and Jones added a 6-yard touchdown reception. Ethan Hilliard also scored for Liberty.

Quarterback Jayden Maiava, despite two interceptions, passed for 270 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for a score.

Larry Royal carried the ball 15 times for 60 yards and a touchdown, and Champ Kapanui had seven carries for 39 yards.
