A man was fatally shot early today when a gun discharged in a motel room on the Las Vegas Strip, according to Metro Police.

The shooting was reported shortly after 1 a.m. in the 3900 block of Las Vegas Boulevard South, near Hacienda Avenue, police said.

The victim was in the motel room with another man, Bryan Contreras, 31, who was in possession of a gun, police said. At some point, the gun went off, striking the victim, police said.

The wounded man was taken to University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, according to police. The Clark County Coroner’s Office will release his name.

Contreras left the motel but was quickly located and taken into custody nearby without incident, police said. He was booked at the Clark County Detention Center on a count of being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm, police said.

The investigation is ongoing, and the case will be submitted to the Clark County District Attorney’s Office for review and consideration of additional charges, police said.

Contreras was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday morning, according to Las Vegas Justice Court logs.
