U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg speaks during a news conference at Henderson City Hall Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2021. The City of Hendersons Reimagine Boulder Highway Project received a $40 million competitive grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg will detail the future of transportation during a speech Jan. 6 at CES, the annual trade show organized by the Consumer Technology Association at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

In announcing Buttigieg’s appearance this morning, officials didn’t indicate if the address will be made remotely or in person.

The event, which was held virtually in 2021 because of the pandemic, returns live Jan. 5-8.

“We are thrilled to welcome Secretary Buttigieg to CES,” Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of the association, said in a statement. “We look forward to discussing how innovation and technology will help create a safer, more environmentally friendly and accessible transportation future.”

A typical year brings 170,000 attendees to Las Vegas for the show. However, with the emergence of the omicron variant and international travel lagging, it’s unknown how many people will attend next year.

Show officials have said over 2,100 exhibitors have signed up, though they have not released how many total attendees had preregistered. All attendees must be vaccinated, and free rapid COVID tests will be available at the show.

Transportation and vehicle technology will be heavily featured, with the automotive sector accounting for at least 200 exhibitors, officials said. Those include BMW, Daimler AG, Fisker, Hyundai Motor Company, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, Stellantis, Waymo and more.

Also, General Motors plans to unveil the Indy Autonomous Challenge, an autonomous passing race scheduled for CES that highlights GM’s vision for mass adoption of electric vehicles, officials said.

Buttigieg last visited Southern Nevada in August to tout a nearly $40 million federal grant to Henderson to reshape Boulder Highway.
