Nevada reported 838 new cases of COVID-19 and eight deaths from the disease on Monday.

The latest numbers bring Nevada to a total of 279,146 reported cases and 4,278 deaths since the pandemic started.

Nevada has seen a decline in daily reports of new cases since mid-January but the rate of coronavirus test coming back positive remains high.

The two-week positivity rate was 17.4% on Monday. State coronavirus response director Caleb Cage told reporters on a phone call Monday that the positivity rate is still high and officials want to see that rate below 10% and closer to 5%.

The number of infections is thought to be far higher than reported because many people have not been tested.

Studies suggest people can be infected with the virus without feeling sick.
