The public can now weigh in on a permanent memorial for the 1 October mass shooting.

Clark County’s 1 October Memorial Committee launched a brief online survey today to gauge what the public wants to see in a memorial honoring the lives lost and impacted on Oct. 1, 2017, at the Route 91 Harvest Festival on the Strip. The survey is open through March 14.

“Should the memorial be a park, monument, sculpture or something else?” asked Clark County Commission Chairwoman Marilyn Kirkpatrick. “Where should the memorial be located? These are some of the questions we want the public to help us answer. The pandemic may be at the forefront of everyone’s minds right now, but it’s important that we never forget what happened here in Las Vegas on 1 October 2017.”

The 15-question survey seeks feedback on what respondents would like to experience in a memorial. This includes what kinds of feelings the memorial should evoke — comfort, solemnity, courage or strength — and how important it is to include education about the event, artistic features, the ability to leave mementos and to address the issue of mass casualty violence, among other issues.

Officials said there would be additional opportunities for public input, including town hall meetings and likely additional surveys.

“The survey is the first step in an ongoing communitywide conversation about the best way to memorialize what occurred,” said Tennille Pereira, the memorial committee chair and director of the Vegas Strong Resiliency Center, a place of healing and support for those affected by the shooting. “We will create a lasting memorial to remember, but getting the input of those affected is key to the success of this endeavor.”

The attack left 58 people dead and more than 800 injure. It is the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history.
