One person was killed and four others injured in a fire Tuesday morning at an apartment complex west of the Strip, according to the Clark County Fire Department.

Crews responded about 11:30 a.m. to Twain Estates, 3651 Arville Street, and found heavy flames and smoke coming from a building, Battalion Chief Rian Glassford said.

The incident was upgraded to a two-alarm fire when calls came in about people trapped inside, Glassford said.

The flames tore through the ceiling and into the attic, causing the roof to collapse, Glassford said.

It wasn’t clear where the person who died was located.

Three other people were being treated at a hospital with unspecified injuries, Glassford said. The status of the fourth injured person was unknown.

Tight quarters at the complex made it difficult for firefighters to position their trucks, but crews worked quickly and focused on saving lives rather than property, Glassford said.

The building where the fire started and three adjoining buildings were evacuated, Glassford said.

The Southern Nevada chapter of the American Red Cross responded to help residents who were displaced, Glassford said.

Damage from the fire, which preliminarily is being blamed on "improper discarding of smoking materials," is estimated at $500,000 to $1 million, officials said.

Early Tuesday afternoon, firefighters, medics and police remained at the scene. A portion of the complex was taped off.

Las Vegas Fire & Rescue assisted in putting out the blaze.
