Murder-suicide at Strip resort parking garage leaves security guard dead

Updated Tuesday, March 9, 2021 | 11:15 p.m.

A Strip resort employee arrived at the property’s parking garage Tuesday evening and killed a security guard before turning the gun on himself, according to Metro Police.

Both men died at the scene, Lt. Ray Spencer said.

The shooting was reported at the Wynn Las Vegas and Encore’s garage, 3131 Las Vegas Blvd. South, about 5:45 p.m.

The shooter, who was absent from work the past couple of days without notifying his employer, used an employee key to enter, which triggered security to be notified, Spencer said.

When the victim arrived at the suspect’s vehicle in a remote area on the fifth floor, the man shot him several times, Spencer said.

That’s when he got out of his car, walked away, and shot himself, Spencer said.

There was no known link between the men, said Spencer, who noted that the investigation remained in its preliminary stages.

In a statement, Wynn Resorts CEO Matt Maddox said the company had notified the families of both men to "offer our condolences and assistance during this difficult time."

"We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident that occurred this evening," he wrote.

The security guard was only described as a Hispanic man in his early 30s, while the suspect, who also is Hispanic, is in his early 40s, Spencer said.

Additional details were not immediately available.
