Jara still considering whether to stay in CCSD post

Superintendent Jara Termination Vote

CCSD Superintendent Jesus Jara listens to a person speak during a CCSD School Board of Trustees meeting at Clark County School District Education Center Thursday, Oct. 28, 2021.

Superintendent Jesus Jara is still considering whether he will keep his job at the helm of the Clark County School District after the board of trustees reversed his firing on early this morning.

“After last night’s vote by the Board of Trustees to reverse its prior termination decision, which would potentially allow me to continue as CCSD’s Superintendent, I am working with my legal counsel to review this development,” he said in a Friday afternoon statement. “Given the concerns that I have previously expressed, we intend to work with the Board and its legal counsel to determine if there is a pathway that would allow me to continue as Superintendent while also implementing appropriate assurances to address and eliminate the harassment and hostile work environment. No matter the outcome of this decision-making process, my focus on and commitment to our students and the District’s staff remains steadfast and will not waver.”

Jara raised the hostility and harassment accusations against certain trustees on Nov. 5, after his termination on Oct. 28 by a 4-3 board vote but before the board backtracked early this morning at the tail end of a nine-hour meeting.

The reversal also came on a 4-3 vote, after one trustee, Irene Cepeda, changed her mind, citing unspecified open meeting law violations surrounding Jara’s firing. She also backed a move that the board OK'd, by the same split, to spend up to $100,000 on an outside consultant to investigate the hostility allegations.

Through his personal lawyer, Jara sent the district a letter demanding $2 million in compensation over the accusations.

Jara was not present at the meeting when his termination was rescinded.
