The Canyon Springs defense made a fourth-and-goal stop from the 9-yard line with 2:20 remaining, and the Pioneers held on for an 18-14 victory over visiting Arcadia High School from California on Friday night.

Darrell Finks had over 100 yards receiving and a touchdown, and an interception late in the first quarter capped off the first of two goal-line stands for Canyon Springs. Amere Swan closed in on 100 yards on the ground with a rushing touchdown.

It was the first win for coach Quincy Burts after a stint at Valley.

The Pioneers jumped out to an 18-0 lead before Arcadia made its run.

"They definitely had some highs and lows," he said. "But to see the kids deal with that adversity, there were times we could've lost the game. We were up 18, we could've easily been down 18. They dug deep and fought solid. For such a young group, it was tough to see them grind it out and finish that game out."

Canyon Springs is hoping Burts can bring a change to the program's culture after going 2-17 in the last two seasons, including an 0-10 campaign in 2019.

"When we play an out-of-state team, especially from California, it's a big win," Burts said. "Especially the home opener, that team fought tough. That's a well-sound football team we played against."

The Pioneers will be on the road against Desert Pines next Friday.
