Degan Jones’ interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter lifted defending 3A state champion Moapa Valley to a 26-22 opening night win against visiting Hurricane of Utah.
Moapa Valley led 20-0 in the first half and appeared to be headed toward a commanding win. But Hurricane scored 22 unanswered points.
Still, a win is a win — especially considering how Moapa Valley played early.
“We were executing on offense on our first two drives,” coach Brent Lewis said.
Landon Wrzesinski had a pair of touchdowns for the Pirates, including a 70-yard score on a screen pass. Ethan Stankosky rushed in from 8 yards for the other score.
