Jerron Baker returned an interception for a touchdown, highlighting a stout night for Sierra Vista's defense in a 6-0 home win against Legacy on Friday.

The upset victory was a great starting point for new Mountain Lions coach Devin Jones.

"I thought defense played one hell of a game," Jones said. "I think our boys stepped up when we needed to."

Jones said he was expecting Week 1 jitters, and that's what happened on offense. He said there were a number of dropped passes that could've put Sierra Vista ahead by a larger margin.

Running backs Omari Evans and Reese Paison carried a run-heavy offense that dictated the pace.

Jones is tasked with revitalizing a Sierra Vista program that has had a rough go the past two years. The Mountain Lions went 0-10 in 2019, but recorded just four wins last season.

Getting a win over a competitive Longhorns team is a good start, Jones said.

Sierra Vista will try to start 2-0 for the first time since 2016 when it hosts rival Durango.

"We'll enjoy tonight," Jones said, "but we've got to get ready for next week."
