Harry Reid International Airport is set to receive more than $16 million in federal funding for projects aimed at renovating runways and phasing out diesel buses, according to U.S. Rep. Dina Titus.

Titus, a Democrat and member of the Transportation & Infrastructure Subcommittee on Aviation, announced the in a release Tuesday afternoon the airport will receive two grants totaling $16.4 million from the Federal Aviation Administration, including a $9.9 million grant. Funding will also come in the form of an additional $6.5 million from the Transportation, and Housing and Urban Development appropriations, Titus’ office said.

“I’m excited to announce this funding for Harry Reid International Airport which will support lowering emissions and improving vital infrastructure for the airport’s continued operations,” Titus said in the release. “I will keep supporting projects like these that promote sustainable infrastructure improvements and advance low-emission vehicle technology as we welcome visitors from around the world to Southern Nevada.”

A spokesperson for the Harry Reid Airport could not be reached for comment.

Construction for the runway incursion mitigation project is expected to start Oct. 24 with an estimated completion date of Sept. 21, 2023, according to the release. The project will provide improvements including “geometric modifications” to existing pavements and the installation of guard lights. The project will also include the rehabilitation of runway pavement for the 1/19 runway and corresponding taxiways.

The airport will also purchase a fleet of 20 electric buses and 20 chargers to phase out existing diesel buses, Titus’ office said. FAA funding is expected to cover four electric buses and two charging stations.

An order for the equipment was confirmed Aug. 3, and the buses are expected to be delivered within 14-18 months, according to the release.
